Detecting breast cancer

Self examination of the breasts is important in detecting cancer. More than 90 percent of breast tumors are found this way. Physical examination by a doctor and other diagnostic tests can establish whether the tumor is cancerous or not. With early detection and treatment, you have a better chance of beating the disease.

"A breast tumor itself is not lethal. The disease kills by metastasizing - that is, by spreading through the lymph system of the bloodstream to other parts of the body. Thus, if breast cancer is caught early, while the tumor is small and before malignant cells have spread to neighboring lymph nodes, there is about a 90 percent chance of a cure," according to Dr. David E. Larson, editor-in-chief of the "Mayo Clinic Family Health Book."

Unfortunately, in half of cases, the breast cancer has already spread, making treatment impossible. A study made by the University of the Philippines College of Medicine - Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) show that 75 percent of cases are in the advanced stage before the first diagnosis is made.

How often should women examine their breasts? The Philippine Cancer Society Inc. recommends monthly breast self-examination and an annual breast exam by a physician for women 30 years old and above. This will help them detect suspicious lumps easily when they are at a curable stage. How should this be done? Here are some tips taken from the "Mayo Clinic Family Health Book":

Examine your breasts once a month. If you have not yet reached menopause, the best time is a few days after your period ends because your breasts are less likely to be tender or swollen. If you are no longer menstruating, pick a day of the month and do the examination regularly on that day.

Stand in front of a mirror. With your arms at your sides, look at the skin on your breasts for any sign of puckering, for dimples, or for changes in the size or shape of the breasts. If your nipples are not normally inverted, look to see whether they are now pushed in. Rest your hands on your hips, and then place them behind your head; in each position, check for the same signs.

Next, step into the shower and, once your breasts are wet and soapy, place your left hand behind your head and examine your left breast with your right hand. Think of your breast as the face of a clock, and place your right hand at 12 o'clock, at the top of the breast. Hold your hand flat, fingertips pressed together, and make a tiny circling motion, feeling for lumps.

Move the hand to 1 o'clock, to 2 o'clock, and so on. Once you return to 12, slide the fingertips closer to the nipple and repeat the motions you just went through, going around the clock in a circle within the first circle; then make an even smaller circle.

Continue until you have checked the tissue under the nipple; look for discharge from the nipple at that time. Finish by examining the area adjacent to your breast, below your armpit, because it also contains breast tissue. Repeat the whole procedure using your left hand on your right breast.

In addition, examine your breasts while you are lying on your back. Again look for nipple discharge. To examine your right breast, put a pillow under your right shoulder and place your right hand under your head. To examine the left breast, place the pillow under the left shoulder and your left hand under your head. (Next: Guidelines for mammography.)

Prostate Exams are Uncomfortable

by Paul Rodgers

Prostate exams are uncomfortable, but should be done starting at age 45. Prostate exams are very humiliating to a good many men and many will not get it done for that reason. Prostate exams are simple and can be conducted in a doctor's office without any need for medical equipment or urine or blood testing. Yearly prostate exams are recommended for all men by age 50, and African American men and men with a close relative who had prostate cancer by age 45.

The prostate gland is a small organ in men, located behind the pubic bone, beneath the bladder and above the rectum. Prostate exams can be required as part of health screening process, recommendation for men who are age 50 and above, or a check-up procedure for those having problems with urination. But some sources believe the tests are an imprecise method of diagnosing prostate cancer, and a cause for unnecessary concern for many patients. According to the study, American and Swiss scientists have identified several genetic markers that indicate risk factors in men with a family history of prostate cancer. The new research, however, is acknowledged to be only a small step toward more dependable prostate screening, and men are better off being screened by the conventional method.

Testicular and prostate health are important for all men, including gay and bisexual men. On the other hand it has been proven that certain foods can also promote prostate health and even stem the production of DHT to an extent. In an unhealthy prostate this can result in a chain reaction of the prostate growing larger very rapidly, picking up speed over the course of several months or years until it is too big of a problem to ignore. So every time you eat tofu, edamame or even soy sauce you are not only promoting a healthy prostate, but also preventing hair loss. As a footnote: Tomato products also promote a healthy prostate.

Part of your prostate care must-dos is having prostate exams. Regular prostate exams will increase your chances of detecting prostate cancer early, which is the most dangerous potential condition. That is why it is strongly recommended that all men over the age of 50 go for regular prostate exams and have a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test. Even in the absence of urinary symptoms, in order to promote a healthy prostate your doctor may perform periodic prostate exams and regularly monitor your prostate specific antigen (PSA) level. Prostate exams are very humiliating to a good many men and many will not get it done for that reason.

Symptoms exhibited by those who are afflicted with a case of prostate cancer are difficulty starting urine flow, painful urination, loss of weight or appetite, blood in the urine and painful ejaculation. When the prostate enlarges to a significant extent, symptoms of the condition, which chiefly consist of urination problems caused by the pressure of the gland on the urethra, usually ensue. A test is required when you find prostate cancer symptoms on yourself. Many men with symptoms are affected so mildly that they don't need treatment. It is important that you understand the symptoms and warning signs of prostate disease and tell your doctor about any that you may experience. Even in the absence of urinary symptoms, in order to promote a healthy prostate your doctor may perform periodic prostate exams and regularly monitor your prostate specific antigen (PSA) level.

Doctors suspect that dietary changes may help men to stall the progress of this disease and prevent it from becoming life threatening. Nature has done a pretty good job putting all of the pieces of the puzzle onto the earth and while some people may just be genetically doomed to hair loss and/or prostate problems, they can probably lessen those problems through diet. It makes sense, however, that major diet changes can spark up the risk of certain cancers, so oddly enough, maybe this should not be a total surprise. Zinc is very important to prostate health and in mals, and antioxidants to supplement our daily diet. Combining a good diet with nutritional supplements and regular exercise will provide us with the basics to fuel our bodies. Health and nutrition experts say that the basis for good cardiovascular health is a nutrient rich diet, exercise, watching your cholesterol level, and monitoring your blood pressure.

Alzheimer's Disease - Symptoms & Coping Needs

by Clara Nolt

Alzheimer's disease is a symbol of dementia or the gradual loss of a sound mind. It is progressive in nature, while gradually robbing the victim of the ability to think and to properly function, sometimes lessening their lifespan. Alzheimer's disease is not a standard part of the aging process. You do not normally expect this to happen in the latter part of life. Alzheimer's disease is not the rule, but rather the exception in old age.

Some of the suspected causes quite often involve the following: the persons age and the history of the family, certain DNA genes, higher than normal deposits of protein in the brain, problems with the immune system and other environmental factors.

It is necessary to watch for warning signals and indications of alzheimer's disease. You can distinguish Alzheimer's from other dementia distinctive changes that take place in the brain, but are only visible with a microscopic exam. during an autopsy. Alzheimer's is a neuro-degenerative and progressive disease that takes place as nerve cells die in the brain, resulting in the memory and thinking becoming impaired, as well as confusion and restlessness, behavior and personality changes, flawed judgment and communication skills and unable to follow instructions, deteriorating in speech, flawed thought process involving visual and space awareness and emotional insensitivity. With alzheimer's disease, motor performance is often protected.

Forgetting pieces of knowledge or information gets more routine and there is less of a chance of remembering. The person may sometimes not recognize friends and family members, which is perhaps the most painful aspect of alzheimer's disease. It is needful to gather as much information as you are capable of gathering, as your doctor is going to ask many questions regarding medical conditions which are both past and present. He will want family history of other members who possibly may have had the disease in some form or other. There are some families who may have several members that have been afflicted, but because of being open to the identical surroundings, it may not be possible to know how much of the fault lies in heredity. There may be times when there is no one available that is capable of answering such questions. Therefore, having collected this information could prove very valuable for all concerned, in helping your doctor with an early diagnosis of alzheimer's disease before the condition is too aggressive.

Alzheimer's disease is very disruptive and stressful for the entire family. Alzheimer's, as well as other dementia problems with the memory, judgments and also with the thought process, make it difficult for the patient to work or to take any part in the daily social and family life. Those who have alzheimer's disease, as well as the family and other care-takers, need as much love and support as possible, from family as well as friends, in order to cope with the situation.

The Mayo Clinic has experts who offer lots of information and advice concerning the treatment and needed care for patients who are afflicted with alzheimer's disease. They will be able to answer many of your questions and explain the process of this disease.

There's a good chance that you have heard about some of the ways in which you can cleanse your colon, but you may not know what the benefits of colon cleansing are. In this brief article, I'm going to explain how colon cleansers can improve your overall health and hopefully it will be helpful in your decision to more forward with the treatment.

One of the biggest reasons that many people have for doing a colon cleanse is constipation. If you're eating poorly, it can result in the walls of your intestine becoming lined with matter that can block normal bowel movements and even make them painful. During a colon cleansing treatment, these substances are broken down and eliminated from your body, allowing stools to pass more freely as a result.

Colon cleansing is also beneficial when it comes to preventing colon cancer. While you should avoid becoming obsessive in regards to the frequency of cleansing treatments, a regularly scheduled cleanse can help keep your colon running smoothly.

There are many other benefits to colon cleansing that you might never think about, such as a trimmer waistline. Many individuals lose their gut after a colon cleanse. Buildup of waste can accumulate over the years and cleansing your colon helps to expel all of that buildup.

As you can see, there are several different benefits to cleansing your colon. If you've never used a cleanser before, there is nothing to be afraid of -- most cleansing programs are gentle and completely painfree.

The Insidiousness of Breast Cancer and its Current Treatment

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

    by John Terryy

In our modern world, the benefits that today's manufacturing and agricultural activities have brought us is more than painfully offset by the damage to our personal health and wellness. During the course of our daily lives, we are continually exposed to common household products such as detergents, insulation, fabric treatments, flame retardants, cosmetics, paints, upholstery preservatives, and coatings for electronic equipment. When these chemicals accumulate within our bodies, they distribute into body fluids as well. While it is painfully clear that we may find such toxic chemicals as fire retardants in the breast milk of Americans who unsuspectingly ingest these and unhealthy levels of many other of toxins form the air they breath, the water they drink, and the food they eat, then it is obvious that our drive for cultural, technological, and scientific advancement has taken a wrong turn somewhere along the way. The chemicals we have produced and utilized in the modern era have had many negative effects upon various human body organ systems and have caused many health problems that will have serious implications far into the future. Data from recent explorations into these issues suggest that all of us are at risk of developing serious diseases from long-term exposure to these chemicals that we had hoped would improve our lives. Our synthetic chemicalization of planet Earth, in the past 60 years, is showing up as a body burden that is a physical tragedy and a fiscal catastrophe. Nowhere are these terrifying results more evident than in today's battles with breast cancer.

The link between toxins in our environment and diseases like breast cancer showing up in our populations is one about which there is little debate as to the cause and effect relationship. While media, political, and health watch organizations warn of the danger associated with large doses of synthetic chemicals within the living environments of human populations, it is apparent that even very low doses of certain chemicals can harm a developing fetus or newborn infant. Small amounts of lead, mercury or PCBs in amounts that would not harm adults readily damage the developing nervous system, causing defects that appear later on. While the general health of an individual is a factor in who is more susceptible to developing diseases from the exposure to toxic chemicals in the environment, the fact that breast cancer is claiming its victims from women both young and old, makes this situation all the more deplorable. We need to take a fresh look at not only the disease itself, but also at what may be alternatives to the current treatment of this abomination.

Since it is obvious that government, with its bureaucratic pace of environmental protection reform and industry with its millions of dollars spent lobbying against regulations that would impact the manufacture of their toxic products despite the obvious health concerns, will not solve this problem in the immediate future; we then, must take responsibility for our own health and wellness with education and pro-active prevention and treatment strategies. Since the current treatment methods, which have produced little to indicate real progress over the past thirty years, are the very essence of barbarism, we must seek out alternative ways of prevention and treatment, and help to bring them into the accepted mainstream of health care practices. We must also work to help ban dangerous chemicals and take immediate steps to protect ourselves from unnecessary exposure to those chemicals that we know to be harmful and contributory to the development of chronic and degenerative diseases.

The current medical practices to treat breast cancer seem more like torturous mayhem that therapeutic intervention. And is it any wonder when doctors and medical students alike get most of their primary, secondary, and continuing education funded, to a large degree by the megalithic pharmaceutical industry, the very authors and purveyors of drastic and toxic medical intervention procedures. This situation is all the more dreadful when it is pointed out that these increasingly toxic and experimental measures lead to future complications and the susceptibility to the premature development of other chronic diseases. This preoccupation with burning with radiation, poisoning with toxins, and slicing and dicing cancer is an appalling state of affairs that must end now. If you believe that current medical interventions do anything but dehumanize cancer victims, then perhaps you will want to go to your local video rental store and check out a movie by the name of "WIT". That our bodies are nothing more than test tubes to those involved in the current cancer treatment methodologies is dramatically illustrated by this fine film. And just when current medical practitioners will leave this seemingly medieval torture seen behind is not immediately apparent.

Imagine if you will that a woman is called into her doctor's office to review the results of her previous examination. The doctor looks at the images on the films that were taken and declares that he sees the shadow of something that could be deadly cancer and as a result has scheduled surgery within 24 hours. Before she even has a chance for the shock and terror to take hold, she is reeling with the realization that she will be going under the knife in less than a day and will never be the same again. Don't kid yourself. This has been and is happening. This is a strategy designed to prevent you from stepping outside of the box of current medical interventions for the treatment of cancer, taking a deep breath, and processing this information in the new light of other possible courses of action. You may, after all, discover that you have other viable alternatives to choose from in this instance. The probable fact of the matter is that a health care provider, who rushes to execute such measures, would not be quite so eager to cut off the breast of his wife or of his daughter without considering less drastic options first. And, not to put too fine a point on the matter, but bringing it closer to home, I also do not believe that your doctor would be as eager to part with one of his testicles should a comparable diagnosis for him be pronounced. It is imperative that we, as consumers, prevail upon our service providers to consider alternatives should we find ourselves in a similar circumstance. In fact, it may speed things along if, when confronted with a situation like this, we would graphically drive the point home by saying something like: "OK doctor, if you want to take away from me one of these (gesturing to the appropriate area of your body), then I think you should have to part with one of those, (pointing with your finger at his "family jewels" location). I will wager that a lively discussion of alternatives for this problem would ensue with little hesitation.

There are alternative remedies out there. Find them. It is known, for example, that certain foods, including many vegetables and fruits, may offer some positive effects in the fight against cancer. Dietary suggestions such as choosing most of the foods you eat from plant sources, limiting your intake of foods high in fat, particularly from animal sources, becoming physically active, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight and limiting the consumption of alcoholic beverages, will add to your efforts to achieve a desired state of wellness and avoid diseases. One approach which has not had wide spread acceptance to date but has become quite intriguing, is the dietary use of certain carbohydrate containing plant materials to either prevent or treat certain cancers. There are numerous references which underscore the importance of a diet obtained primarily from plant sources as a major step in preventing cancer, or at least benefiting cancer patients. There are literally hundreds of reports supporting this concept.

Today the prevention of cancer with proper nutrition is widely accepted. It is believed, that in time, the efficacy of these materials in the fight against cancer will be firmly established, and that alternative choices for treatment will be included in the accepted resources for the treatment of cancer. This will help to negate the current propensity to pressure cancer patients into surgery or toxic therapies causing them to agree for fear that they have few, if any other viable options. Cancer cells and the means to deal with them effectively are located within our bodily systems. Those systems need but to be catalytically activated by the proper raw materials. If we are functioning properly at the cellular level, then the growth of cancer can be controlled and held in check from within by natural mechanisms that were in place long before modern medicine dreamed up its current toxic and drastic strategies. So, educate yourself about prevention and alternative options, move your body, eat well, supplement wisely, and TAKE BACK YOUR LIFE!

Breast Cancer – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

by User name - Peter Hutch

Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer in women and the second most common cause of cancer death in women in the U.S. While the majority of new breast cancers are diagnosed as a result of an abnormality seen on a mammogram, a lump or change in consistency of the breast tissue can also be a warning sign of the disease.

The disease is most commonly diagnosed in women over age 50. Very few women under age 30 develop it. Despite the rise in incidence, there has been a small drop in the number of deaths in the recent years and only about one-fifth of cases prove fatal. This reduction is due to improvements in treatment and the increased use of mammography for screening, which means that tumors can be detected early, when they often respond well to treatment.

Fibrocystic breast disease is common and usually benign condition. Symptoms include swollen, tender breasts, and/or one or more lumps. Frequently, symptoms worsen just before a woman's menstrual cycle, subsiding near the end. For the majority of women these symptoms are a temporary discomfort, however some women experience severe pain.

    Causes

Age and gender - Your risk of developing breast cancer increases as you get older. The majority of advanced breast cancer cases are found in women over age 50. Women are 100 times more likely to get breast cancer then men

Hereditary risk: It has long been known that women whose mothers or sisters had breast cancer have a higher risk of developing the disease themselves. Recently, it has been discovered that breast cancer can develop when a woman inherits a breast cancer susceptibility gene from one of her parents. The most common of these genes are the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. These genes account for about 10 percent of all breast cancer cases and in families that have these genes, the risk of breast cancer can be very high.

Family history of breast cancer - You may also have a higher risk for breast cancer if you have a close relative has had breast, uterine, ovarian, or colon cancer. About 20-30% of women with breast cancer have a family history of the disease.

    Symptoms
The widespread use of screening mammography has increased the number of breast cancers found before they cause any symptoms. But some are still not found early.
The most common sign of breast cancer is a new lump or mass. A lump that is painless, hard, and has uneven edges is more likely to be cancer. But sometimes cancers can be tender, soft, and rounded.

Breast discharge is a common problem and is rarely a symptom of cancer. Discharge is most concerning if it is from only one breast or if it is bloody. In any case, all breast discharge should be evaluated.

    Treatment

Surgery is the mainstay of therapy for breast cancer. The choice of which type of surgery is based on a number of factors, including the size and location of the tumor, the type of tumor and the person's overall health and personal wishes. Breast-sparing surgery is often possible.

Every year, 6,800 new cases of ovarian cancer are discovered in the UK, and there are about 4,650 deaths per year caused by the ovarian cancer. About 50 percent of ovarian cancer patients are already at an advanced stage by the time a correct diagnosis is made. She said I had had Stage IIIc ovarian cancer and she did not know if there was lymph node involvement.

Women who have a prior history of breast cancer will also have an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer at some time in their life. It is also said to be that women is at high risk in her advanced age.

Some other factors are: A family history of osteoporosis. Abnormal absence of menstrual periods (amenorrhea). Anorexia nervosa. Vitamin D deficiency. Use of certain medications (corticosteroids, chemotherapy, anticonvulsants and others).

The statistics for osteoporosis related fractures is downright scary - according to the NOF, A woman's risk of hip fracture is equal to her combined risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer. One study linked dairy products to an increased risk of ovarian cancer.

It has been observed that the majority of women with epithelial ovarian cancer are not diagnosed early enough. Note that radiation is rarely used in ovarian cancer treatment. In most instances, different kinds of anticancer drugs are prescribed in combination in order to speed up ovarian cancer treatment.
